Construction PR and marketing: leveraging web 2.0 tools

Late last year I was approached by one of the editors of Freepint‘s FUMSI magazine (Find, Use, Manage and Share Information) to write an article for its ‘Use’ section about how construction people are beginning to utilise Web 2.0 applications and approaches (Joanna Ptolomey told me she had trained and worked in the construction industry as a planning engineer for ten years – hence her keenness to cover the sector). At her suggestion, I based the piece on a CIMCIG presentation I gave last September, contrasting marketing and PR practices 20 years ago with those of today. The finished article has just been published in the February 2010 edition of FUMSI magazine.

For me, it is also a useful illustration of what I have learned through my involvement with the Be2camp community. Several of the industry-specific examples that I mention in the piece are about applications that have been showcased at various Be2camp events. (My next speaking engagement is with fellow Be2camp founder Martin Brown – we are running a Web 2.o event for the Black Country Constructing Excellence Club in Wolverhampton this coming Thursday evening, 25 February).
